About the Author

Hi, I’m Tony

When Catherine and I were in our fifties, we found out that she had early-onset Alzheimer’s and I needed open heart-valve replacement surgery. Motivated by our love for running and travel, we sold our home, retired from our jobs, and became nomads, running marathons and half-marathons all over the world.

This book is a nonfiction account of our six years of flying, running, walking, sailing, and sightseeing from Atlanta to Antarctica. We found joy in seizing each day and following our passions for running and travel.

Since we began this journey, we’ve traveled to eighty-two different countries and have run at least a half-marathon in thirty-five countries and on all seven continents.

Tony and Catherine’s story is a beautiful example of why it’s possible and important to live well even with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. Anyone who has been dealt the blow of early-onset Alzheimer’s will find new ideas on how to live well, why the diagnosis doesn’t mean life is over and quite a bit of inspiration in the pages of this book.

I was deeply moved by the story of Catherine Popp and Tony Copeland-Parker. They have formed a partnership that has carried them far along the marathon road. The many points that Tony and Catherine have shared with us – practical information about Alzheimer’s and guides to living the best life possible, should help fellow travelers who have Alzheimer’s or who have a family member or friend with this disease work through the illness and continue to live a full life. Tony has worked through a heart value replacement. Both have shown courage as they continue their travels. The 50 States Marathon Club is proud to have them as members, and I am so pleased that they shared their story with us.
